Thank you for applying for a certificated substitute position with the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. All of your questions should be answered if you read the following information. Incomplete information packets and/or incomplete information on your application will not be accepted.
You will need to fill out an on-line substitute application by going to our web page at www.nmusd.us . When you get to the web site you need to click on "employment". Next you will click on "Certificated Substitute Applications".
You do not need to submit your application that you have filled out on-line. You do need to send in the paperwork requested below. Once we receive that paperwork, we will pull your application and review your information at that time. Please send in or drop off the information below.
Three letters of recommendation
Copy of California Credential or Sub Permit
Test Scores if applicable (MSAT, CSET, etc.)
Copies of all transcripts

Applications will only be reviewed if we are actively hiring substitutes and if all of the supplemental paperwork has been received from the applicant. DO NOT call and verify that your application packet has been received since this process could take up to a month or more if we are not hiring. When we begin to hire substitutes, a review of the above documents will be made along with the application. If you are being considered for the substitute list, you will be notified by e-mail to attend an orientation.
SELECTION AND REQUIREMENTS

Employment is based upon evaluation of the written application, recommendations and personal interviews.
To insure that all classrooms are covered on busy days, priority of selection of new substitutes will be given to those applicants who have a registered California teaching credential, who are potentially available for service each day, and who are willing to accept assignments which involve less than a full day, and who are willing to take most types of assignments. Applicants who hold emergency permits or plan to apply for emergency permits will be considered next.
After the above applicants are hired and if there is still a need for more substitute teachers, considerations will be given to applicants who have limited themselves to certain days and certain school sites.
Substitute personnel files must be completed and verified prior to the first assignment.
Substitutes shall be retained year-to-year based upon the quality of their performance. If your services are to be retained, you will receive a letter of reassurance and a substitute profile sheet in May of each school year. This form must be returned by a specified date to remain on the substitute list.
Substitutes must have a valid California Teaching Credential registered with the Credential Office, Orange County Department of Education. A copy of this credential must be submitted to complete your packet.
Newport-Mesa will accept emergency permits if there is a need for substitute teachers due to not enough credentialed teachers applying for substitute positions. If you have already applied for your permit, a copy of that permit must be submitted with your application packet. If you do not have your permit and you wish to apply for one, you may do this by contacting the Orange County Department of Education at 200 E. Kalmus, Costa Mesa, (714) 966-4000. To apply for your permit, you must have a BS or BA and complete passage of the CBEST.
CBEST (California Basic Educational Skill Test)
CBEST is a requirement of the State of California, as well as the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.
The current salary rate for substitute teachers is:
$120.00 Daily Rate
$135.00 Long Term (more than 15th consecutive days-retro to 1st day)
$ 60.00 Half Day
Once you have been accepted as a substitute teacher you must attend an orientation session before you begin to substitute for Newport-Mesa.. Prior to your orientation, you will be given additional hiring paperwork to complete. At your orientation you will be required to submit the following information:
TUBERCULIN TEST (TB)
Tuberculin test (TB) – Negative – Test must have been taken within the last 60 DAYS
CERTIFICATE OF MEDICAL EXAMINATION (Paperwork supplied by District Office)
A Medical certificate, in the form prescribed by the State Board of Education, showing that a person employed for the first time in a California School District or County Superintendent of Schools Office in a position requiring certification qualifications, is free from any disabling disease unfitting the applicant to instruct or associate with children is required. The Education Code provides that:
*The medical certificate shall be submitted directly by a physician or surgeon
licensed under the Business and Professions Code.
*The medical examination shall have been conducted not more than six months
before the submission of the certificate.

*The medical certification shall become a part of the personnel record of the
employee and shall be open to the employee or his designee.
DRIVERS’ LICENCE AND SOCIAL SECURITY CARD
Social Security Card is mandatory – if you do not have one, you should apply for one from the nearest Social Security Office before you come to the orientation. You are allowed to use your passport for your I-9 only.
All substitutes must have substitute clearinghouse fingerprints with the Orange County Department of Education. If you do not have fingerprint clearance, you may call the OCDE at 714 966-4000 to receive information. It is best to have completed the Clearinghouse Fingerprint process before you come to the orientation.
